Dr. Hyon Joo joined Alaska Spine Institute in 2018 and is dedicated to aiding her patients to have a fulfilling life with a holistic approach to rehabilitation medicine and pain management.
Dr. Joo grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and is a graduate of A.J. Dimond High School. She received her undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduation, she served as a volunteer with the United States Peace Corps assigned to Honduras, Central America. After completing her time as a Peace Corps volunteer, she was accepted to Tulane University’s Master of Public Health program but chose to attend Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota on scholarship, working as a Teacher’s Assistant and received her Master of Science degree. Dr. Joo attended medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine on a Health Professions Scholarship Program from the United States Air Force. She was stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, Osan Air Force Base in South Korea and completed her military service as a Flight Surgeon attached to the 962nd AACS squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, working in the Aerospace Medicine Clinic. Dr. Joo received her acupuncture certification for physicians through the Academy of Pain Research in San Francisco, California.
When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, being active, reading, volunteering and is a passionate and ardent supporter of public education and athletics. She feels privileged to be practicing in her hometown and enjoys sharing the many activities that Alaska has to offer.
